R Zink Introduction Post
Hello everyone, my name is Renee Zink but I’ve been going by Zee or Zink because eventually I will change my first name. My major is Art & Creative Media with a minor in Business Management (which has been surprisingly eye-opening and helpful). I’m a mom to a wonderful son (9) and my partner has 2 daughters (9/10) that make a full house in the summers!
My hobbies and interests are related to rocks, art, and reading (in no order, I love them all). I am starting a jewelry/art business with my partner called 4DCrafted, and so I’m hoping to get that going soon as we both graduate next year. I also do my own art under RZ’s Art Corner but I’m only on Instagram so far (@rzsartcorner).

Artwork which I consider to be beautiful is this piece by Maquenda/Meike Hakkaart from the Netherlands. I came across it recently and it stayed with me for a while afterwards so that I even went back to it and commented on the facebook post where I saw it. This artist painted with their menstrual blood, which I’ve seen before, but this time it struck me because of the message I read in the caption. They spoke of their transformation and previous experience with this same art style, noting how the blood is clearer and different this time. I think the powerful way this message resonated with me and connected with my own life is the biggest part of why I found this so beautiful. I also felt that I understood what the artist was trying to convey really well and so that makes it feel more successful and purposeful to me. And besides the concept, the aesthetics are stunningly organized in a monochromatic way which draws your eyes all over the piece. Lines and dots seem sacredly appropriate to match the waves and cycling patterns which define menstruation. I think that beauty is definitely subjective and does depend on who is looking.

I can see why this artwork stayed with you for awhile, it has me mesmerized. It tiptoes between the line of a powerful but fluid dance with the red being long flowing hair mimicking the flow. Or of a wounded and possibly dying animal flailing around trying to escape the pain it is in. I feel as though the artwork explores the greyed line that balances the beauty of menstruation with the gruesomeness.
ReplyDeleteThanks Alex! I completely agree, it is so powerful in its own right and the way it is organized feels so profound to me. I think this art makes me think of how many movements can look the same even when they come from opposite places, like dancing in pain or joy. The trail of the being's hair is captivating in how it flows but is also grounded. Thanks for commenting!
DeleteHi Zee! We have had a few classes together but it is super cool to get to know you a bit more each time. That is really awesome that you and your partner are going to start a jewelry and art business, I cannot wait to see what you do. The art piece that you chose is very intriguing to me. I really enjoy art with strong concepts and this one is very interesting. I also just like the overall aesthetic of the art though. The red is so vibrant and knowing it is blood makes it even more interesting. I love the way that the hair has so much movement within but the drops of blood ground the composition in a way.
ReplyDeleteHi again Paige! It's always good to see you (and your lovely pottery) again in our classes!
DeleteI'm so glad you enjoyed this art, too! They're on instagram/fb and I highly recommend checking them out!! The contrast of movement and grounding really resonated with me, too. A lot of their artwork is very cyclical and representative of natural concepts or elements. Animals and reflection are big themes in their work and I love how they bring seemingly universal ideas into visual aesthetic.
